Introduction

The usage of machine technology has a big influence on the consumption of water and energy in the laundry processes. A wide range of machinery and options exist for processing all different types of laundry. For operating the machines in the most economical and ecological manner a basic understanding of the machine technology is indispensable.

Module 2 gives a review on the state-of-the-art of the machine technology in the media-consuming processes of laundry washing and drying. In particular, it describes the various types of machines used for washing (i.e. washer extractors and continuous batch washers), for extraction (i.e. press and spin) and for drying and finishing (i.e. dryers, garment finishers and flatwork ironers). Knowing about these technologies is the basis to identify optimising possibilities in your own laundry.

Learning targets

After finishing the module you will:

know different designs and layouts of washer extractors

be able to distinguish different drum designs, loading and unloading possibilities, chemical dosing possibilities and water flow diagrams of washer extractors

know different designs and layouts of tunnel washers

understand the differences between standing baths and counterflow washing as well as between oscillating and rotating washing in tunnel washers

know possibilities of optimizing the rinse process in tunnel washers

be able to describe the "3 columns of extraction technology"

know the different fields of application for extraction presses and centrifugal extractors

have a feeling for the influence of extraction on the energy consumption in the following drying processes

know different designs and layouts of dryers, garment finishers and flatwork ironers
